When approaching a pony to catch him or pet him always walk towards his shoulder slowly and quietly. You should hold the headcollar behind your back and make sure you do not let the lead rope dangle on the ground. You should speak in a confident quiet voice to let him know that you are coming. A startled pony may run away or may be frightened and kick you. When you reach him, pat his neck or shoulder.

Before putting on the headcollar, unfasten the buckle on the left hand side. When you have patted the pony, pass the lead rope over his neck, place the noseband over his nose and the headpiece behind his ears. Then fasten the buckle back up. If you have a tit-bit for him this is a good time to let him have it.
