If you are using a double bridle, pelham or kimblewick then fit the curb-chain as follows:
  1. Hook one of the end links of the chain to the right-hand hook. This first link should be hooked so that, when twisted flat in a clockwise direction, the fly-link (the loose link in the middle of the chain) falls from the lower edge of the chain.
  2. From the left side, twist the curb-chain in a clockwise direction until the links are lying flat.
  3. Giving it an extra half twist, hook the end link on to the left-hand hook.
  4. If necessary, shorten the curb-chain evenly on both sides by selecting a shorter link and hooking it over end link so that the spare links lie flat as shown in the video.
If you use a pelham, fit the curb-chain from hook to hook, either directly or via the bridoon rings. For a double bridle, fit the curb-chain under the bridoon. The curb-chain should come into action when the cheeks of the bit are drawn back to an angle of approximately 45° to the line of the mouth. Fit the spare end of the lip-strap through the fly-link and buckle up on the left side.

Top Tip
  • Always make sure the curb chain is flat by holding one end and twisting the other in a clockwise direction until it lies flat.
