Ride Safely in an Enclosed Area

D
When you are learning to ride you will often learn in an enclosed area such as a field or a riding arena, this may also be referred to as a manège. When you enter the arena make sure that the gate is safely closed before you begin riding.

  • Your instructor may ask you to ride in ‘closed order’ as a ‘ride’ which is where you ride single file following a lead rider. You should always listen to your instructor and follow their instructions. You should always keep at least one pony’s length apart to make sure that your pony doesn’t get kicked and that you have enough time to stop without running into the pony in front. You should always be alert and aware of what other riders are doing.
  • Alternatively you may be asked to work in ‘open order’ which is where you ride individually or you may just be riding in an arena with other riders. When you do this it is important to follow several ‘rules of the school’ to make sure that you do not inconvenience other riders and to keep you safe from collisions. Again, you must always be alert and aware of what is going on around you and plan where you are going to allow other riders the chance to avoid you.

Top Tip
  Rules of the School
  • Pass left hand to left hand.
  • Allow other riders to complete school figures such as circles.
  • Turn away from the track and go across the arena rather than overtaking or getting too close to another horse.
  • If you are walking use the inner track to allow riders who are going faster to use the outside track.
  • Do not use your whip when riding next to another horse.
  • When halting it is best to do so on the centre line or alert other riders in plenty of time if undertaking an exercise.
